the leaves are falling on the street beneath my window, making a soft
sound almost like a gentle shower. it's here, autumn. the kids are at
school and it's almost too chilly to keep the windows open at night.
long pants and jacket weather again, the birkenstinks to be put out with
tomorrow's garbage.
i've always loved this season the best. spring is supposedly the season
of rebirth, but to me the fall is when things start to happen. my annual
calendar starts on september 01. september is when we had to start a new
school year, when the swimming schedule started again, and september is
historically the month when i started a new job. we moved back to canada
from europe in september 1977, and i did so again when i came back from
detroit in 1998. i joined the internet start-up in september 2002, and i
joined the government in september 2004. i left the government in
september 2006. my birthday is in september. i guess this is an
important month for me.
so how do i commemorate this september, my first september alone in a
long time, my first september in my new european life? the opportunities
are endless, but i think i'll start with this coffee

this is a beautiful post.
i love autumn first but miss the feeling of that "first day of school". it's been 20 years but still...
Good post DMG - has prompted some research and musings on September....
•Worst month for wasps (northern hemisphere) and perhaps WASPs
•Highest number of births (do the math - December is conception season according to the oft-cited and seminal [pardon the pun] Torgen longitudinal study of seasonal fertility rates amongst European Automotive manufacturing executives in the '60s, '70s and early '80s)
•Worst stock markets on average (decline led by automotive sector typically)
•Most tornados and cyclonic activity (see Torgen study above)
•Most hurricanes
•Worst allergy month
•Prinsjesdag (per the importance of the carriage in this ceremony, see Torgen study above)
•The second most popular time to start a diet (January is first)
•Best time to fertilize a northern hemisphere lawn [see fertility above]
•Month with the highest and most successful rate of suicide by doctors and medical professionals
•Month with most new automobile models introduced (see Torgen above - see Plymouth Toranado)
Related, I think thematic to your entry is a stanza from a poem in the latest edition of Rampike literary journal by Canadian poet Brain Henderson - This from "The Before" from "Two Poems"
It is precisely in what remains
there speaks to us a language
of the perishing of things. And what is perishable
has always been placed on the outside
of the circle of meaning, on the outside
of the eternal, but the feather, the hollow
bone is the soul of flight.
Watch any vulture
tilting and rocking on a late September sea of wind.
